We found an old trash pile in a dry creek bed in our woods. A lot of what has been dug out is broken glass, but occasionally we find a perfectly intact jar. Instead of throwing these jars away or leaving them in the pile, we kept putting them in a bucket on our porch. The one bucket turned into a few buckets because one of us decided to start hoarding glass jars that previously contained jelly, tomato sauce, pickles, etc. that were destined for the trash. One day, one of us put some rocks, dirt, and moss from the same area the trash pile was found into one of the jars. We all agreed that it kind of looked like a forest floor. Since the two humans like the woods, we made two of these forests in jars and took them to work so we could have jars filled with dirt, rocks, and various Appalachian flora growing on our desks.
These forests-in-jars are best used by people who enjoy walking around in the woods, imagining how the world would be if the agricultural revolution never happened. Would it be good or bad? This person doesn’t know, but they probably need a reminder that while they live in a universe where humanity is no longer hunter-gatherers and they are required to go to work to participate in an economy that is mostly made up, there is actually more to life than their job, and they should make time to explore and be weird. This is by no means a requirement, but it probably helps.
